MALAYSIA’S TOURISM HIGHLIGHTS – JUNE 2013

It’s a busy month of June! Visitors will be able to enjoy exciting events taking place all over Malaysia every single day in June. Here are some of the highlights:

MELAKA INTERNATIONAL RIVER FESTIVAL 2013, 25 MAY – 30 JUNE 
Inspired by the San Antonio River Festival in USA, Melaka International River Festival 2013 is back for the whole month of June. Among the highlights include a water sports fiesta, dragon boat competitions and decorative floats parade. KUANTAN CENTURY RIDE 2013 (KUANTAN 160), 02 JUNE 2013

BORNEO BIRD FESTIVAL 2013, 07-09 JUNE 2013
The Borneo Bird Festival celebrates the beauty of wild birds in Malaysian Borneo. Spread over 3 days, the event offers a great opportunity for visitors to see up to 570 bird species. KOTA KINABALU JAZZ FESTIVAL 2013, 14-15 JUNE 2013 
The jazz musical extravaganza in Kota Kinabalu is back with a line-up of local and international artists. The Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival 2013 is now a signature event of Sabah which represents many different facets of jazz music. www.kkjazzfest.com.

SABAH DRAGON BOAT RACE, 15-16 JUNE 2013
Organised in conjunction with the Duan Wu festival, Sabah Dragon Boat Race 2013 has attracted many local and international teams as far as Hong Kong, China and Japan. SABAH INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL 2013, 23-28 JUNE 2013 
Dance troupes from around the world gather as cultural ambassadors for the annual Sabah International Folklore Festival 2013. The event aims to promote culture tourism and provide a platform for participating countries to share their unique cultures through folk song and dance performances. “MAGIC OF THE NIGHT” - 1MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL TOURISM NIGHT FLORAL PARADE, 22-30 JUNE 2013
Visitors will witness a procession of beautifully lighted and decorated boats that cruise across the Putrajaya Lake every night. The main events include night floral boats photography contest, fireworks display, and also cultural group performances.

PUTRAJAYA FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL 2013, 22-30 JUNE 2013
Popularly known as Floria Putrajaya, the Putrajaya Flower and Garden Festival 2013 showcases the best of the landscape and horticulture industry; from commercial landscape products to garden design and flower displays. Local and international exhibitors from as far as the UK and South Africa are invited to create exceptional displays and presentations in a garden setting environment. SUNSET MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013, 28-29 JUNE 2013

RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013, 28-30 JUNE 2013
This year’s Rainforest World Music Festival 2013 will gather music enthusiasts once again at the Sarawak Cultural Village with music by renowned world and indigenous musicians. With a line-up of 18 bands playing a diverse range of world music genres, the festival features seven different acts per night over three nights. For the afternoon session, there will be programmes such as informative workshops, ethno-musical lectures and jamming sessions. http://rwmf.net.

KEDAH CUTI-CUTI HOMESTAY CARNIVAL 2013, 28-30 JUNE 2013

FOLLOW MALAYSIA’S CAPTAIN JAMES ANTHONY TAN ON HIS 1MALAYSIA AROUND THE WORLD EXPEDITION

Malaysian born Capt. James Anthony Tan has passed the half way stage of his 1Malaysia Around The World (1RTW) expedition that will see him become the youngest pilot at just 21 years old to fly solo around the world in a single engine aircraft. In total, James will spend 50 days and 96 hours flying, covering 21,900 nautical miles across the Northern hemisphere, visiting 20 countries with 30 scheduled stops. James will clock over 110 flying hours when the expedition is complete on 12 May 2013. The expedition will see Capt. James enter the World Record Books and achieve 5 national level records in the Malaysia Book of records. Follow the journey at www.1rtw.com.my. 

James, who was born with dyslexia, had to leave conventional schooling at 8 years old to enroll in a special program specific for dyslexic children and through this expedition, James wants to inspire young people around the world. James intends to create awareness and bring equality to special needs individuals; while at the same time, leaving a legacy so that others will dare to do the impossible. To date over 300 dyslexia associations around the world have been informed of this expedition.

Capt. James Anthony Tan outlines “My goal is to empower the pioneering minds of youth by leading with passion and humility. I want to do this so that someone else can learn from it and do it better than me the next time.”

To realise this dream, James received support from the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak. As a result, a committee was assembled that comprises of various youth bodies inclduing MYPA (Malaysian Youth Pilot Association), 1M4U and MBFM (Majlis Belia Felda Malaysia).

James is flying solo in a single engine aircraft, a Cessna 210 Silver Eagle; called The Spirit of Malaysia in a historic flight circumnavigating the globe. To date, only 124 such flights have been recorded, making it scarcer than the number of space explorations ever made. 

On 26 March 2013, the honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia launched the expedition in Pulau Langkawi, Kedah. Capt. James Anthony Tan then departed Subang Skypark in Malaysia and travelled to Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, Alaska and Denver before reaching his current destination Indianapolis. James’ next stops include Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland en route to his arrival in London at the end of this week.

From London, James’ journey will take him to France, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, on to Qatar and straight to Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and back to Thailand before ending the epic journey where he first took off in Subang Skypark, Malaysia due for 12 May 2013.

Visit Malaysia For A Luxury Break Or An Idyllic Honeymoon!

MALAYSIA WATER FESTIVAL PORT DICKSON, 3 – 5 APRIL 2013
The Malaysia Water Festival is back with Port Dickson as its first station; activities like the International Jet Ski Challenge and beach soccer competitions will be there to cool down the tropical heat. As one of the most anticipated events in Port Dickson, it is expected to draw more than 130,000 tourists. So, get ready to join the party!

KELANTAN STATE’S CULTURAL CARNIVAL 2013, 5 – 8 APRIL 2013
The annual 2013 Kelantan State’s Cultural Carnival returns to promote the uniqueness of Kelantanese culture that differs from most of the Malay cultures. It is initially an event to promote Kelantan as a tourist destination with rich culture, natural attractions and delicious food. Highlights of the event include the cultural practices of dikir barat, mak yong, and wau bulan (kite-flying). Handicraft products such as songket, silverware and mengkuang will also be introduced to the visitors. ARCHIPELAGO DRUM FESTIVAL 2013, 9 – 17 APRIL 2013
Prepare to get into the rhythm of percussion and drum music from all over the world at the Archipelago Drum Festival 2013 at Dataran MBMB, Melaka. Performers from Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea and other countries are invited to present their art. It is an event initially held to raise awareness among the younger generation to engage with their heritage.

20TH MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY FESTIVAL 2013 (SPRING EDITION), 19-22 APRIL 2013
Malaysia’s largest international jewellery show is coming to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre: The 20th Malaysia International Jewellery Festival 2013 (Spring Edition) invites quality international jewellers from Italy, India, Myanmar and other countries to present their latest collections. Held twice annually, the four-day exhibition is expected to attract a large crowd as jewellery export-import trades in Malaysia are now tax free! THE F1 PETRONAS MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX IS NOW LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY

The Sepang International Circuit, 50km from Malaysia’s Capital of Kuala Lumpur is once again preparing to welcome over 100,000 spectators for The F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix from 22 – 24 March 2013.  The race is now in its 15^th Anniversary and promises to be one of the biggest sporting events in South East Asia in 2013 www.sepangcircuit.com

Sepang’s circuit is not just used for the Petronas grand prix, but has events all year round from the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, to the Sepang 1000KM Endurance Race. For those that wish to emulate their heroes, Sepang International Circuit also offers track days for both cars and motorcycles.

GET OUT OF WINTRY BRITAIN & EXPERIENCE THE WARMTH OF MALAYSIA’S GARDENS IN EDINBURGH!

While it’s raining and cold in the middle of our British weather I was delighted to take refuge in the warm and welcoming Palm House at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to experience the Malaysian Glasshouse Trail.

Entering the Glasshouses through the famous 19th Century Palm House, I had my first introduction to the Malaysia Trail. Throughout the trail, there are panels that detail the scientific significance of each of the plants in addition to explaining the past and current research being carried out by Royal Botanic Garden scientists on the different kinds of flora in Malaysia. I explored the beauty of Malaysia’s flora from a different perspective within this specially created environment.

One highlight of the trail is the tropical splendour of the Orchid & Cycad House where diverse and colourful epiphytic plants grow on trees. Furthermore, at the very heart of the trail is the invitingly warm aquatic house that hosts a plethora of Malaysian plants. This is also where the trails education centre is located, and where I found a market stall stocked with traditional Malaysian products such as Malaysian coffee, chocolate, pepper and rice to take home and try.

The feature plant of the trail is the famous durian. The fruit is native to Malaysia and is known for being the smelliest fruit in the world. As it ripens it emits a repulsive odour likened to old socks and rotten onions. Thankfully it is only in its dried form on the Malaysian Market stand. The trail also features Malaysian pineapples.

Following along the trail, I came upon a house featuring Malaysia’s montane flora. I finally reached the climax of the trail in the wet tropical forests with a variety of exotic plants ranging from several types of gingers to African violets.

At the end of the trail, an information panel gives more reasons to visit Malaysia if you haven’t already made up your mind.

Throughout the trail, I gained a greater insight into Malaysia and what the country has to offer, whilst enjoying the warmth and serenity of the replicated Malaysian tropics. The trail allowed me to expand my knowledge on the research projects undertaken by the Royal Botanic Gardens in Malaysia which is fascinating for novices and plant lovers alike. Overall, the Trail gave me a good insight about the destination and provided an accurate report of the Royal Botanic Garden’s work in Malaysia.

TOURISM MALAYSIA JOINS AITO

Tourism Malaysia is delighted to announce a new affiliate membership of AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators), to further develop relationships with independent tour operators in the UK and raise awareness of Malaysia’s unique tourism products to AITO tour operator and agent members. Malaysia is currently the only tourist office affiliate of AITO from the South East Asia Region.

Abdul Rauf Abu Hassan, Director UK & Ireland, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board stated “Tourism Malaysia is looking forward to a closer working relationship with independent tour operators through our new membership of AITO”.

Tourism Malaysia will now be able to attend AITO member events and communicate with AITO members through the AITO website, direct mail and newsletters.
