NEW MINISTER OF TOURISM AND CULTURE TO UNVEIL VISIT MALAYSIA YEAR 2014 TOUR OPERATOR PACKAGES FOR THE UK MARKET


During his first official visit to the UK, Malaysia’s newly appointed Minister of Tourism and Culture, The Honourable Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, announced today a series of exciting packages for the UK market for Visit Malaysia Year 2014. In a press conference at the Landmark Hotel in London, the Minister underlined how crucial the UK market is for Malaysian tourism, announced details of events taking place in Malaysia throughout 2014, and discussed the wide impact which Visit Malaysia Year 2014 is expected to have on Malaysia’s tourism industry and economy.

Malaysia is expected to welcome around 28 million tourists during Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and generate around Ringgit 76 billion in income, with the UK as its top European market for inbound tourism and 10th worldwide. As part of his inaugural visit, the Minister aims to capitalise on the UK’s huge outbound travel and to tap into the massive potential that the UK market offers, with Malaysia aiming to attract 475,000 tourists from the UK in 2014. 

In his address to the media, the Minister announced the launch of a series of exciting holiday packages for Visit Malaysia 2014 which Tourism Malaysia has developed in conjunction with 14 top UK tour operators. He also touched upon the diverse range of activities and highlights that Malaysia has to offer which makes it the 10th most visited country in the world. In his speech, the Minister also explained that Visit Malaysia Year 2014 will be based on four experiential themes which highlight the diverse attractions in Malaysia. These themes are: Heritage & Culture, Adventure & Nature, Luxury, Wellness & Spa, and Island & Beaches.

On Saturday, the Minister will be co-launching Malaysia’s Cultural Week with the Mayor Councillor Abdul Mohamed of Southwark/Lambeth, a week-long cultural festival taking place on London’s Southbank, providing Londoners and visitors to the Capital with a free taste of what Malaysia has to offer including a packed entertainment programme and food and crafts stalls.

ENJOY MALAYSIA’S DELIGHTS FOR FREE AT LONDON’S MALAYSIA WEEK

Malaysia Cultural Week is returning to London's South Bank from 19 to 23 September 2013 providing Londoners and visitors to the Capital with a FREE taster of the destination’s offerings. With FREE entry and FREE entertainment, Malaysia Cultural Week is the ideal opportunity to find about more the country’s rich and multi-faceted culture. Organised under the “Faces for 1Malaysia “ theme, the event, which will be officially co-launched by His Excellency Dato' Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and the Mayor Councillor Abdul Mohamed of Southwark/Lambeth will include an exciting array of performances, traditional music and craft-making demonstrations depicting the rich legacy of Malaysia's traditional craftsmanship and sales of craft products. 
 
Museum artifacts, original Malay manuscripts and heritage items will be displayed for the viewing of the public. Visitors will also have the opportunity to savour delicious and popular Malaysian cuisine. Traditional games will be showcased and visitors may join in the fun as well. There will also be a promotion of holiday and tour packages to Malaysia at the travel booths on site, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

The event will also include a fashion show with Malaysian sporting Malaysian Batik and Songket textiles showcasing traditional and contemporary designs.

Malaysia Week is the perfect chance to find out more about this fascinating country and plan a trip over Visit Malaysia Year 2014 which promises to be one of the most exciting times to travel to the destination.

TOURISM MALAYSIA APPOINT NEW DIRECTOR FOR THE UK AND IRELAND



Tourism Malaysia is delighted to announce the appointment of Junus bin Suhid as its new director in the UK and Ireland. The award-winning Mr Suhid arrives in London from Tourism Malaysia’s head office where he was previously a deputy director within the industry development division for over three years. Mr Suhid brings with him a glittering résumé having been awarded the Malaysia Tourism Minister’s Excellence Award in 2012, plus over 25 years of experience in the tourism industry having previously held numerous senior positions within Tourism Malaysia, the Putrajaya Tourism Action Council and the Pahang Tourism Action Council.

As the new director of Tourism Malaysia UK and Ireland, Mr Suhid’s role will be to lead operations and strategic decision making at Tourism Malaysia’s London base in Trafalgar Square, with the primary aim of promoting Malaysia’s profile as an exciting tourist destination to the UK and Ireland markets, increasing visitor numbers especially during Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Mr Suhid, who studied Science in Business Administration at the University of Southern Colorado in the United States, replaces Mr Abdul Rauf Abu Hassan with immediate effect.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Junus Bin Suhid, Director of Tourism Malaysia UK and Ireland, said: “I am delighted to join the UK team in what is an exciting year for us. I will build on my previous success, experience and strong passion for Malaysia to make Visit Malaysia Year 2014 the best ever. I am fortunate to have an excellent team on board at Tourism Malaysia UK and Ireland, and look forward to working with them and the UK travel industry.”


ONLY FOUR MONTHS TO GO UNTIL VISIT MALAYSIA YEAR 2014


The countdown to Visit Malaysia Year 2014 is almost complete, with only four months to go until the start of an exciting year for Malaysia in which 29 million foreign tourists are forecast to sample one of the most diverse and exciting countries in the world. Visitors can look forward to a range of world class showcase events throughout the year at the premier destination, including the F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix, the Malaysia International Shoe Festival, the Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism Festival and the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2014 have been well underway with 2013 earmarked as a preparatory year which has attracted millions of visitors to the country through several mega events and programs held throughout the past 12 months, as Malaysia aims to attract 36 million tourists from abroad by the year 2020.

As we enter into the final third of 2013, there is still an abundance of activities in Malaysia for visitors to indulge in. October sees the launch of Fabulous Food 1Malaysia, a three-month gourmet festival which aims to celebrate and showcase the very best of Malaysia’s unique local cuisine. The world’s best riders and bikes are also in action in October at the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, held over three days at the Sepang International Circuit.  The spotlight will also be on Malaysia as US President Barack Obama makes an historic visit, the first visit by a US President since 1966.

November sees the arrival of international yacht racing teams battling the monsoon weather and South China Sea for a chance to lift the Monsoon Cup. The Hindu festival of Deepavali also begins on November 3rd and is an official holiday. For shopaholics, the Malaysia Year End Sale launches this month, starting on the 8th and running until January 2014.

The finale of 2013 concludes with the Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia Dance Tourism Carnival in December. Visitors can also enjoy the experience of a tropical Christmas throughout the month as shopping malls and hotels light up with the magic of the festive season.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP AT KUALA LUMPUR – MEGA SALE CARNIVAL AND ENCHANTING END OF YEAR SALE SET TO SWELL VISITOR NUMBERS

Shopaholics looking for some great late deals should look no further than Kuala Lumpur (KL). With its multitude of luxury malls and top brand names offering an array of clothes, cosmetics, shoes, handbags and the latest in technological and electrical appliances, the Malaysian capital is ranked one of the World’s best cities to shop in. Visitors can look forward to fantastic exchange rates, duty free status on most items plus two blockbuster shopping events in the form of the 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (currently running until 1 September) and the Malaysia End of Year Sale (16 November – 05 January). With a minimum of 40 percent discount on most goods, this is one shopping experience that’s excellent value for money.

The 1Malyasia Mega Sale Carnival, currently taking place across Malaysia until 1 September 2013, is one big shopping celebration where shopaholics enjoy irresistible offers and big discounts from luxury brands to affordable items at malls and retail stores throughout Malaysia. Later in the year, Christmas shopping is made simple at Malaysia’s End of Year Sale starting on 16 November and running through to January 2014.

KL is home to around 66 shopping malls including world class retail venues such as the Suria KLCC shopping mall, located at the base of the World famous Petronas Twin Towers, and The Sunway Pyramid and Mid Valley Megamall, both equipped with the latest designer stores. NOT TOO LATE TO RACE TO THE SUMMIT – MALAYSIA SET TO HOST “WORLD’S TOUGHEST CLIMBATHON”

Hundreds of mountaineers are once again set to race to the top of one of South East Asia’s highest mountains as Mount Kinabalu plays host to the 27th Annual International Climbathon. The prominent peak will set the stage for an endurance event dubbed ‘The World’s Toughest Mountain Race’ which takes place on the weekend of 19 & 20 October 2013, and it’s not too late to join them! This gruelling endurance race sees climbers reach heights of over 2,760 metres above sea level while covering a total distance of 33km.  Now in its 27th year, the annual climbathon is an international competition set amongst stunning scenery. The 2013 event includes two races; the Summit Race on 19 October is 33km long and is open only to qualified runners and the Adventure Race on 20 October is 23km long and open to all men and women aged 18 years and above. In both events, climbers start at Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site; Kinabalu Park, before making the ascension up Mount Kinabalu then heading down to Mesilau Nature Resort and crossing the finishing line at Kundasang town. For those looking to conquer other peaks and explore treks throughout Malaysia, this beautiful country has more than enough to satisfy the curiosity of even the most adventurous traveller. One of the most climbed mountains in the country is Mount Ledang, located at the Johor/Melaka border. This five hour climb passes through caves and rock cliffs with rapids at its summit. Another climb to test the physically fit is Mount Datuk, situated at the end of the Titiwangsa Mountain Range. Mount Datuk is 883 metres above sea level, resulting in some spectacular picturesque views from its summit. For a challenging climb, adventurers are urged to try Gunung Tahan, the Peninsular’s highest peak. An experienced guide is required for this 130km return journey, which crosses over rainforest, rivers and mountain ridges. For those looking for an easier climb, Mount Santubong, 35km North of Kuching, is a limestone hill with a well made trail through its diverse rainforest, perfect for nature lovers.
